Bach's St. Matthew Passion to be performed in Logan

Mar 2, 2016

Johann Sebastian Bach’s revered sacred masterwork “St. Matthew Passion” will be performed in the Ellen Eccles Theatre on Good Friday, March 25th at 7 p.m. by the American Festival Chorus and Orchestra with Dr. Craig Jessop, dean of the Caine College of the Arts at Utah State University conducting. Jessop said he is excited to bring to Logan what is regarded as one of the masterpieces of classical sacred music.

“Hearing the St. Matthew Passion of Bach is like experiencing one of the great creations of religious art,” he said. “Like looking at the Pieta of Michelangelo, or the Sistine Chapel, the Vatican of Michelangelo, it’s just one of the monuments of Western Civilization and the Christian tradition.”

He said it retells in two parts the compelling story of the events leading up to the crucifixion. He said the American Festival Chorus and Orchestra’s performance of this profoundly moving work will be a real opportunity for many patrons.

The role of the evangelist will be sung by the incomparable tenor Paul Phoenix, formerly of the King’s Singers of Great Britain. Other soloists are Darrell Babidge, Jesus, Celena Shafer, soprano, Holly Sorenson, alto, Robert Breault, tenor and John Buffet, bass. For ticket information call 752-0026.
